This post will be a packing list. Yeah… It’s not really a list, but it’s just to give you a gauge of what you should and should not bring. These are just recommendations, so pack things to YOUR preference.
Clothes:
Warm clothes — Not too many, you can always buy more on Boxing day.
Thermals — Uniqlo is tried and tested to be very warm!
Jeans — For obvious reasons.
Scarves, gloves, and hats — If you desire. You can buy inexpensive ones in York.
Winter coat — Get a good one. A waterproof, fleece-lined one will get you anywhere.
Long and short sleeved shirts — For slightly warmer days/summer.
One set of smart clothes — For formal events. For guys: a suit and (TASTEFUL) tie will do. For ladies: you can never go wrong with a (TASTEFUL) LBD.
A pair of casual shoes, and a pair of smart shoes — There will be at least one smart event during Fresher’s week.
Running shoes — If you plan to exercise. If not, you can always buy them cheaply here*.
Items:
Passport
Cash in £s
Accommodation contract (if you want)
Printed screenshot of your CAS — Just in case, but none of us have ever been asked for it.
Credit/Debit Cards — You can pay by card at many places. It’s actually very convenient.
TRANSPARENT PENCIL CASE — You need this for exams. You are only allowed a transparent one in exam venues. Bring it if you have it, but they also distribute them for free at certain booths during Fresher’s events so be on the lookout for them.
Pens and LOTS OF REFILLS — You won’t be able to find your beloved Uniball 0.38 here…
Foolscap paper — It’s cheaper in Singapore but you can get it here too if you don’t have enough luggage space.
Contact lens solution — It’s cheaper in Singapore.
All your medicinal oil, Chinese medicine — They’re bloody expensive here and might not even have what you’re looking for.
Milo powder — Horlicks just doesn’t cut it sometimes. (You can get it at some oriental supermarkets or order it with your TESCO’s delivery, but it is slightly more expensive here)
Rice cooker — Yes. You will miss rice. Isetan and BHG have several sales before you come over, take the chance to buy them then.
Instant noodles — Indomee and Prima are your best friends when you’re homesick.
Chopsticks — I use chopsticks every day so I can’t live without them.
Power adaptor — For when you travel to Europe
Multi-socket extension — Campus accommodation has limited power sockets (Check the details of your college accommodation first. Some rooms in Langwith and Constantine college have eight power sockets in each room so you won’t need one).
Sanitary napkins — The ones here may not fit your “friend’s” high standards. I personally like the ones here; they’re scented and thin.
DO NOT BRING:
Candles, fairy lights — They’re not allowed in campus accommodations.
Kitchen utensils and crockery (knives, pots, pans, spatulas, etc.) — Buy them here*. Save space in your luggage.
Bedsheets — Some seniors might tell you to bring them, but I personally wouldn’t recommend it. You can get them here quite cheaply*. Unless you have delicate skin and want like 600-800 thread count sheets (which I personally have at home), buy them in York.
Meat and poultry — You will miss bak kwa, but you will also miss your train when you get stopped by the customs officer.
Hoodies — YOU WILL BUY MANY OF THEM HERE. The University has several, your College has several, your sports club will have one, the societies you join will probably have one.
Hairdryers — Unless it’s travel-sized, don’t bother.
Your entertainment system — You will learn to live without a PS4 when you have nowhere to put it.
Other stationaries — Plastic folders, fasteners, rulers, erasers, pencils, notepads, graph paper can all be bought at the Physics bookshop on campus*.

And there it is! Yay! This list will be edited as time goes by, obviously. And I will think of more things to add to the list if I feel it’s needed. If you have any questions, just leave me a comment or drop me an email. Whatever floats your boat, really.
